When Brixton went on Fire, 40 years After

"When Brixton went on Fire, 40 years After" is a National Heritage Lottery Fund supported project which commemorates 40 years of the Brixton Riots of 1981. The rioting which began in Brixton, in London Borough of Lambeth, in April 1981 shocked the nation. For three days, rioters -predominately young, black men -fought police, attacked buildings and set fire to vehicles. The riots resulted in 279 injuries to police and 45 injuries to members of the public; over a hundred vehicles were burned, including 56 police vehicles; almost 150 buildings were damaged, with thirty burnt. There were 82 arrests and the damage caused came to an estimated value of £7.5m.
