Twined Basketry

Twining is one of the oldest basketry techniques. It usually uses soft materials, either natural or manmade, with two or more weavers wrapping around upright stakes. This allows great variation in form, pattern, colour, and texture. 

The work and samples included here are by Kim Winter, basketry tutor at Morley, and students Annette Welch, Chatu Madhvani, and Zan Stott. Materials used include paper yarn, wire, jute, sisal, cotton, lavender and verbena stalks, New Zealand flax, bindweed, cordyline leaves, waxed linen, raffia, crocosmia leaves, and driftwood.
