OUR STUDIO IS IN OUR HEAD

RETROPECTIVE EXHIBITION OF THE WORK OF MARTIN SIMS

27 November - 16 December 2025

Old Sounds, 1989, Wood, graphite

Presenting Our Studio Is In Our Head, a retrospective exhibition spanning the 1980s to 2010s. Featuring sculpture, installation, video, sound, neon, maquettes, and drawings, alongside global project documentation. The title, from a 2003 interview, reflects Sims’s shift from physical sculpture to more ephemeral media. Curated by friend and former colleague Nat Goodden, this posthumous exhibition traces the evolution of Sims’s experimental practice.

Artist Bio:

Martin Sims (b. 1951, Canterbury, UK) was born in Canterbury, was brought up locally, and studied sculpture and art history at Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art between 1969-1977. He taught at Chelsea and had three early-career London exhibitions before relocating to Australia, where he spent the great part of his professional life. A central concern in Sims’ work was the question of how to give shape to thoughts and emotions that themselves have no inherent physical or visual presence. This exhibition points to a developmental journey in pursuit of an effective response to that question, through expressive languages that embrace both physical materiality and dematerialised form.
