THE CHANGING RUHR

Printmaking

5 - 22 May 2026

The towns and cities of the Ruhr valley in western Germany were once shaped by heavy industry - coal mining and steel. Now little of this industrial heritage remains. In a series of linocut prints entitled The Changing Ruhr, long-time Morley printmaking student Stephen Smith explores the physical and environmental changes experienced in this former industrial powerhouse, the vanishing landmarks of chimneys, mining headgear and massive blast furnaces, and the open-air museums that have retained some of the distinctive structures of the region’s industrial past.
